Here are some tip on Skin Self Examination

Regular skin self-examinations are a vital part of maintaining your health. Skin cancer, including melanoma, is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide—but when detected early, it is highly treatable. In Gibraltar’s sunny climate, where exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays is high, being proactive about skin health is especially important.

We encourage everyone to check their skin once a month for any unusual changes. Look for new moles or growths, or changes in existing spots—such as differences in size, shape, colour, or texture. Use the “ABCDE” guide:

  • Asymmetry – one half is unlike the other

  • Border – irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges

  • Colour – varied shades of brown, black, or even red and white

  • Diameter – larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)

Other things to look out for are any change over time in size, shape, colour, or symptoms (itching, bleeding)

Check your entire body—from head to toe, including often-overlooked areas like the soles of your feet, under your nails, and your back. Use a mirror or ask for help when needed.

If you notice anything suspicious, don’t wait. Contact your GP or health professional for advice. Early detection saves lives.
