Staying Safe in Hot Weather

Hot weather can be enjoyable, but too much heat can be dangerous — especially for babies and young children, older people, pregnant women, people with long-term health conditions, and anyone working or exercising outdoors.

When temperatures rise, take simple steps to stay safe: keep cool, drink plenty of water, avoid the strongest sun where possible, and check in on anyone who may be more vulnerable.

Keep cool

Stay out of direct sun during the hottest part of the day and keep indoor spaces as cool as possible.

Drink water

Drink regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty, and avoid too much alcohol or caffeine.

Protect yourself

Wear light, loose clothing, use sunscreen, and wear a hat and sunglasses outdoors.

Check on others

Look out for older relatives, neighbours, young children and anyone living alone.

When to get help

If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice by calling 111.

If someone becomes unconscious or you think it is a medical emergency, call 999.
