Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Haematologist to join the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA), replacing the current post holder who is due to retire in July 2026. Applicants must, by virtue of their citizenship or residency status, be entitled to take up employment in Gibraltar and must be resident, or become resident upon employment.
The successful applicant will be the sole Haematologist in Gibraltar, overseeing the pan‑Haematology service for all GHA entitled patients. This includes providing clinical oversight to the haematology section and transfusion service, working in parternship with the Pathology Services Manager, to ensure appropriate operational governance and regulatory compliance, as well as responsibility for the care of inpatients and outpatients with haematological conditions. The Consultant will join a medical team of 10 Consultant Physicians, many of whom are also single‑handed specialists. The post holder will be required to participate in on‑call duties for haematological advice, most of which can be provided remotely and without the need for out‑of‑hours attendance on site.
The service is supported by two Clinical Haematology Nurse Specialists, a dedicated and well‑trained team of junior doctors (shared with physician colleagues), and laboratory staff managed by a Pathology Services Manager. There are well‑established links with hospitals in Spain and the UK for tertiary support, MDT discussions, and access to specialised treatments and investigations not provided locally.
The Gibraltar Health Authority is organised and modelled on the UK NHS and follows the traditions of British medical practice. Applicants must hold full registration with the UK General Medical Council, with a license to practice. They should be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview if currently in a UK training programme.
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It is easily accessible from London, Bristol, and Manchester, with flight times of just over two hours. The post is based at St Bernard’s Hospital, a modern facility situated by the waterfront and offering stunning views across the Strait of Gibraltar and towards North Africa.
Language: English is the official language, with Spanish widely spoken.
Travel Information
- Airfare: Full reimbursement for return economy flights from the UK.
Visa Requirements for Non‑EU Nationals
- A Schengen Visa is required for transit through Europe. This must be obtained from the applicant’s country of residence prior to travel. Schengen Visas cannot be issued by Gibraltar authorities.
This post is offered on indefinite terms, subject to a 12‑month probationary period, and carries the following salary scale (based on experience): £113,919; £115,319; £116,720; £118,118; £119,518; £125,116; £132,841; and £140,563. The post also attracts an additional 12% on‑call allowance and an 18% cross‑cover allowance.
