Job Summary

The Gibraltar Health Authority invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the post of Consultant Paediatrician. Applicants must, by virtue of their citizenship or residence status, be entitled to take up employment in Gibraltar and who are, or on employment will be resident in Gibraltar.

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It is easily accessible from London, Bristol, and Manchester, with flight times of just over 2 hours.

The post is based at St. Bernard’s Hospital, a modern facility situated by the waterfront, offering stunning views of the Straits of Gibraltar and Northern Africa.

Language: English is the official language, with Spanish widely spoken.

Visa Requirements for Non-EU Nationals

  • Please note that a Schengen Visa is required to transit through Europe. This must be obtained from your country of residence prior to travel. Schengen Visas cannot be issued by Gibraltar authorities.

The GHA is organised along UK NHS lines and provides comprehensive primary, secondary, and community healthcare services. Tertiary services are supported through established links with leading UK and Spanish centers.

The post is based at St Bernard’s Hospital, Gibraltar’s modern acute hospital, which includes an Accident and Emergency Department, approximately 130 inpatient beds, fully equipped diagnostic and therapeutic services, a Maternity Unit and Neonatal services, and Rainbow Ward (Children’s Ward) with 21 beds including HDU and isolation facilities.

Paediatric outpatient and community services are delivered through the Children’s Health Centre.

The Paediatric Service

The Paediatric Department provides a full spectrum of secondary care paediatrics, including general paediatrics, neonatology (SCBU/Level 1 care), and community paediatrics.

The service supports a paediatric population of approximately 8,000 children and works closely with UK tertiary centres and multidisciplinary teams.

The Consultant team currently comprises 5 WTE Consultants delivering a comprehensive and integrated service.

The Role

The successful candidate will join a dynamic Consultant team delivering high-quality paediatric care across hospital and community settings.

Clinical

Provide comprehensive general, neonatal and community paediatric services. Participate in a 1 in 5 non-resident on-call rota. Act as first on-call Consultant for paediatric emergencies, including high-risk deliveries. Deliver SCBU/Level 1 neonatal care, including stabilisation prior to transfer of sick/premature neonates. Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary teams. Contribute to child safeguarding responsibilities across Gibraltar.

Governance & Quality

Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement. Develop and implement clinical protocols and pathways. Contribute to risk management and service development.

Teaching & Academic

Teach and supervise junior doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. Participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and contribute to training and education programmes.

Management

Contribute to service planning and policy development. Support efficient use of healthcare resources. Undertake additional duties as required by GHA management.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must hold Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health Membership/fellowship [MRCPCH / FRCPCH or equivalent], be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise, and be on the GMC Specialist Register in Paediatrics (or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview). Candidates should have experience in general paediatrics, neonatology and community paediatrics.

Desirable Attributes

Interest in teaching and training. Experience in service development or leadership. Subspecialty interest aligned with service needs. Experience working in multidisciplinary settings.

This post is offered on indefinite terms, subject to a 12‑month probationary period. The role carries the following basic salary scale, dependent on experience: £113,919; £115,319; £116,720; £118,118; £119,518; £125,116; £132,841; and £140,563, which is subject to Gibraltar PAYE income tax regulations. The post also attracts an additional 12% on-call allowance and 18% cross-cover allowance.
