Medical Investigation Unit
The Medical Investigation Unit in St. Bernard’s Hospital provides the following services:
Four consultants each with their own specialities ie. Respiratory Problems, Geriatrics, Endoscopic Procedures and Diabetes. Consultants also visit periodically from the U.K. providing services in Cardiology, Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Nephrology and Respiratory Medicine, complimenting the services provided locally.
The unit has an Endoscopy Suite with a spacious recovery area and a de-contamination room were all scopes are thoroughly washed and passed through a sterilising process. Here in this Suite procedures such as Gastroscopy, Flexi-Sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy and Bronchoscopy are carried out.
Exercise Tolerance Testing is carried out in conjunction with both Cardiac and Blood Pressure Holter monitoring and recording of Electrocardiograms.
Spirometry and Lung Function Tests are also carried out in this unit.
Electroencephalography is provided as an ancillary service.
The local Geriatrician also holds a fortnightly falls clinic to assess patients mobility.
